The ANA’s Code of Ethics for Nurses includes language relating to patient advocacy:

  • The nurse’s primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community.
  • The nurse promotes, advocates for, and strives to protects the rights, health and safety of the patient. 

The American Nurses Association (ANA) includes advocacy in its definition of nursing:

Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering  through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities and populations.
